Description
This color etching with aquatint by American artist Donald Stoltenberg (1927-2016) is titled Tall Ships. The work presents a stylized, geometric interpretation of multiple sailing vessels against a vibrant sunset-hued horizon. The composition utilizes sharp linear details for the rigging and soft, blended color gradients within the triangular sail forms, transitioning from deep burnt orange to brilliant reds and cooling into a dark blue foreground. This signature style is characteristic of Stoltenberg’s nautical abstractions. The print is hand-signed in pencil as Stoltenberg Imp in the lower right margin, indicating the artist personally pulled the impression. The margin also contains the title Tall Ships and the edition number 17/150. The piece is housed in a modern silver-toned metal frame under a white mat. Frame measures 31 x 20 inches
