Fall Eclectic Auction
Lot 84:
Description
This early 20th-century souvenir letter opener is constructed from a cast copper alloy with a dark, aged patina. The handle is fashioned into a full-length figurative representation of a Native American wearing a traditional feathered headdress. This handle is joined to the blade by a shield-shaped cartouche secured with two rivets. The front of the cartouche features embossed relief imagery depicting a waterfall and a bridge. On the left side of this shield, the word SOUVENIR is oriented vertically, and the text NIAGARA FALLS is embossed horizontally below the bridge imagery. The blade is tapered with a rounded tip and a slight leaf-shaped profile. The reverse side of the handle and blade shows the same cast texture and darkened finish.
